Orange trees, flamenco and Moorish palaces in Andalusia's capital

Seville is the Spain of postcards: horse carriages, tiled courtyards, bell towers and flamenco in back-street bars. The old centre is one of the largest in Europe and almost all of it is walkable.
It's also one of the hottest cities in Europe in summer. Come in spring, when the orange blossom is out and the city throws its two biggest festivals.
Top things to do in Seville
- 1
Real Alcázar
A royal palace of Moorish courtyards and gardens, still used by the Spanish royal family. Book ahead.
- 2
The cathedral and Giralda
The largest Gothic cathedral in the world, with ramps (not steps) up its old minaret tower.
- 3
Plaza de España
A sweeping semicircle of tiled alcoves for every Spanish province, in María Luisa Park.
- 4
Santa Cruz
The old Jewish quarter: whitewashed lanes, hidden squares and tapas bars.
- 5
Flamenco in Triana
Cross the river to the potters' and flamenco quarter for a show in a small tablao.
- 6
Setas de Sevilla
A giant wooden 'mushroom' canopy with a rooftop walkway at sunset.
Where to stay in Seville
- Santa Cruz
Pretty and central, right next to the Alcázar and cathedral.
- Arenal
Between the cathedral and the river, close to the bullring and good bars.
- Triana
Across the river, more local, with great tapas and flamenco.
Best time to visit Seville
Best value: Mar, May, Sep–Nov. March to May and late September to November. Avoid July and August, when it often passes 40°C.
Getting there and around
About 2h 30m from London to SVQ, and flights from most UK airports.
Walk. The centre is compact, and there's a tram along the main avenue. The airport bus to the centre takes about 35 minutes.
Day trips from Seville
- Córdoba
The Mezquita, a mosque with a cathedral inside, 45 minutes away by high-speed train.
- Cádiz
An ancient port city surrounded by sea, about 1¾ hours by train.
- Ronda
A white town split by a deep gorge and a dramatic bridge, about 2 hours by bus.
Good to know
- Book the Alcázar online: queues are long and slots sell out in spring.
- Semana Santa (Easter week) and the Feria de Abril push hotel prices up sharply. Book months ahead.
- Many sights close or shorten hours on Monday, so check before you plan your day.
