Women travellers
Türkiye for women travellers
In 2025, British consular staff were told of 29 sexual assaults among 4.27 million British visitors. The FCDO says that many involved someone the victim met during the day, and a significant number involved hotel or spa staff.
- No specific FCDO warning
- Warnings of assault or harassment
- Extra care
- Restrictive laws or dress codes
The overall risk is low, but there is a pattern. The FCDO's advice is not to share personal details, such as your room number, hotel or social media accounts, with people you've just met. Watch for spiked drinks and methanol, especially in nightlife areas.
Where it feels different
- Antalya, Marmaris, BodrumWarnings of assault or harassment
Resort nightlife. Watch drinks and be careful with new acquaintances.
- IstanbulWarnings of assault or harassment
Busy and cosmopolitan. Use registered taxis.
- Conservative inland areasWarnings of assault or harassment
Covering your shoulders and knees helps.
Getting around
- Use registered yellow taxis or ride apps, and check the meter is on.
- Dolmuş minibuses are cheap and busy, and women often sit together.
- Istanbul's metro and trams are safe and easy.
- Pre-book airport transfers for late-night arrivals.
What to wear
In the resorts, beachwear is fine by the pool and beach. In mosques, cover your hair, shoulders and knees, and many provide scarves. Inland and in more conservative areas, looser clothing helps you blend in.
Before you go
- Don't share your room number with people you've just met.
- Report any incident to the hotel and the police (112), and contact the British consulate.
