Women travellers
India for women travellers
The FCDO says female travellers 'often experience verbal and physical harassment', and British women have been sexually assaulted, including rape, in several states. Plenty of women travel India solo and rate it among their best trips, usually after planning transport and accommodation very carefully.
- No specific FCDO warning
- Warnings of assault or harassment
- Extra care
- Restrictive laws or dress codes
India is huge, and experiences vary a lot. Kerala and Himachal Pradesh are usually described as easier than parts of Delhi or busy north Indian rail routes. In most places, staring and unwanted comments come with the territory. The FCDO also advises against being alone on isolated beaches at any time of day.
Where it feels different
These are travellers' common experiences, not official ratings.
- Kerala & GoaWarnings of assault or harassment
Often seen as easier for solo women. The FCDO still warns about isolated beaches.
- Rajasthan & the Golden TriangleExtra care
Busy tourist circuit. Touts and staring are common.
- DelhiExtra care
Use the Metro's women-only coach and Uber or Ola rather than street autos at night.
- Himachal Pradesh & RishikeshWarnings of assault or harassment
Popular with solo women, especially in yoga and trekking circles.
Getting around
The FCDO advises against travelling alone or hailing taxis on the street, especially at night, and says app taxis like Uber and Ola are widely available, including at airports. On trains, upper berths in AC classes give more privacy, and many routes have a ladies' quota for bookings.
What to wear
Loose clothing that covers your shoulders and knees draws far less attention. A light scarf is useful for temples, and as an extra layer.
Before you go
- Women's helpline: 1091. Emergency: 112.
- Share your app taxi journey with someone.
- Don't accept food or drink from strangers on trains. The FCDO reports robberies after spiking.
