LGBT+ travel
Dubai for LGBT+ travellers

Same-sex activity is illegal in the UAE, and the FCDO says people have been punished, especially in public or where it caused offence. In practice, LGBT+ visitors who stay private rarely have problems. Even so, this is a destination where you're relying on discretion, with no legal protection.
- Legal and broadly accepted
- Legal, but conservative attitudes
- Illegal or prosecuted
- Illegal; death penalty possible
Dubai is one of the busiest stopovers for UK travellers, and plenty of gay and lesbian couples holiday there. Big international hotels generally treat a same-sex couple asking for a double bed like anyone else. The risk comes from anything public: kissing, holding hands in a mall, or a disagreement that brings the police in for some other reason.
The UAE's laws on public behaviour are strict for everyone. Kissing in public can lead to arrest even for straight couples, and swearing or rude gestures, including online, are criminal offences.
How it plays out in practice
- International hotels & resortsIllegal or prosecuted
Same-sex couples sharing a room is routine for big chains. Hotels expect behaviour to stay private.
- Malls, beaches & the MetroIllegal or prosecuted
Treat these as public space. Dress codes apply in malls, and kissing can lead to arrest for anyone.
- Dating appsIllegal; death penalty possible
The main route into trouble. Profiles can be fake, and messages can be used as evidence.
- Trans & gender non-conforming visitorsIllegal; death penalty possible
Cross-dressing is illegal under UAE law, according to the FCDO. Seek specialist advice before travelling.
- SharjahIllegal or prosecuted
More conservative than Dubai, and alcohol is illegal there.
Regional security right now
Separate from LGBT+ issues, the FCDO currently warns of Iranian strikes across the Gulf since July 2026, with possible flight disruption and airspace closures. Check the latest before you book a stopover.
Before you go
- Book a hotel from a big international chain, and avoid apartment rentals where neighbours could complain.
- Keep affection private, and don't post couple photos with location tags while you're there.
- Avoid using dating apps in the UAE.
- Remember that swearing and rude gestures are illegal, online too.
