Split's old town is built inside Diocletian's Palace, a Roman emperor's retirement home, with cafés and homes among its columns. The palm-lined Riva promenade faces the harbour.
It's the main ferry hub for Hvar, Brač and Vis, and Krka's waterfalls are a day trip away.
