Women travellers
Egypt for women travellers
The FCDO says most reported sexual assaults happened in Red Sea resorts, often by someone the victim had just met, such as hotel or excursion staff. It also says hotel staff have sometimes discouraged victims from going to the police. In Cairo, street harassment is common.
- No specific FCDO warning
- Warnings of assault or harassment
- Extra care
- Restrictive laws or dress codes
That first fact surprises people: the resort, not the souk, is where the FCDO sees most reported cases. It doesn't mean resorts are dangerous. It means the relaxed holiday atmosphere is when people let their guard down with strangers.
Setting by setting
- Red Sea resortsExtra care
Don't let staff into your room when you're alone, and be careful with new acquaintances on excursions.

Calmer, structured travel. Touts at sites still apply.
Before you go
- Share your taxi details and live location with someone, as the FCDO advises.
- Report any incident to the Tourist Police (126) before you leave Egypt.
- Cover your shoulders and knees in Cairo and at religious sites.
