Galungan and Kuningan, celebrated twice a year by the Balinese calendar, fill streets with bamboo poles called penjor. Nyepi, the day of silence in March, shuts the whole island, including the airport, for 24 hours. The night before brings the ogoh-ogoh parades of giant demon figures.
