Visas & entry
Australia: eVisitor or ETA?

You need permission before you fly, but it's free or cheap. Choose the eVisitor (subclass 651), which has no charge, or the ETA (subclass 601) through the official app, which has a service fee.
- No visa needed
- Apply online before you go
- Visa on arrival
- Visa in advance
Both let you holiday in Australia for up to 3 months per visit over a 12-month period. The ETA app is quicker for most people, while the eVisitor is free if you don't mind a web form.
Your two options
- eVisitor (651)Apply online before you go
Free, applied for online through the Department of Home Affairs.
- ETA (601)Apply online before you go
Applied for in the official AustralianETA app. No visa charge, but there's a service fee.
How to apply
- ETA: download the Australian ETA app, scan your passport chip and take a selfie. There's a small service fee.
- eVisitor: apply online through ImmiAccount. It's free, but takes longer.
- Apply before you book flights if you have a criminal record, as it can affect approval.
- Both last 12 months, with stays of up to 3 months each time.
At the border
Australia has some of the strictest biosecurity rules in the world. Declare all food, plants, wood and animal products on your arrival card. Undeclared items can bring big fines. Muddy walking boots may be cleaned or checked.
Before you go
- Apply through the Home Affairs site or the official app only.
- Emergency number: 000.
