Jamaica for LGBT+ travellers
Sex between men is illegal in Jamaica, though the FCDO says the law isn't always strictly enforced. Many Jamaicans have hostile attitudes, and criminals have used dating apps to lure and rob people. Resort holidays with discretion are common. Being openly affectionate in public is risky.
- Legal and broadly accepted
- Legal, but conservative attitudes
- Illegal or prosecuted
- Illegal; death penalty possible
Jamaica is a place where the resort experience and life outside it can feel very different. International all-inclusive chains often welcome same-sex couples, but outside the resort gates, homophobia can be open and occasionally violent. Lesbian couples are less affected by the law, but face similar social attitudes.

Choosing a resort
- Ask the resort directly whether same-sex couples are welcome, and get it in writing.
- Big international chains are more likely to welcome couples than small local hotels.
- Read recent reviews from LGBT+ travellers.
- Avoid 'couples only' resorts with unclear policies.
Outside the resort
Book excursions through your resort or a reputable tour company. Keep affection private in towns and on public beaches. If you're harassed or threatened, leave the situation and report it to your resort and the British High Commission. Discretion is the advice here, not because Jamaica is safe, but because the risks are real.
Before you go
- Check your resort's policy on same-sex couples before booking.
- Don't meet app contacts away from public places.
