Berat is a UNESCO-listed Ottoman town, with white houses climbing a hillside below a castle that people still live in. Its many windows give it the name 'city of a thousand windows'.
Inside the castle walls are Byzantine churches and the Onufri icon museum, and nearby wineries and the Osum Canyon make good day trips.
